Profect’s Beauty for Ashes is one of the most real, most transparent, life-changing EP’s I’ve heard!
“and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.” Isaiah 61:3 NIV
Sentencing Day, Aftershock(skit),Inner Thoughts, Time Keeps Ticking
Sometimes I listen to an artist and think to myself, “he or she is fake breaking. They rapping about someone else life.” The way “Beauty for Ashes” was put together by Profect I can tell he has been there and back!
Beauty for Ashes wasn’t just an EP, it was a testimony!
Beauty for Ashes took me back right off the jump with “Sentencing Day.” I’ve been down that road before. After the judge read him his time Profect starts speaking to his momma by apologizing.
My mother wasn’t in the court room when I got sentenced but I would of imagined I would have said something similar to her at that time. That was the first thing I thought about when the gavel hit, how much I had disappointed my mother.
Profect went on to say in “Sentencing Day”, “now they’ll be handing me to the State, they sending me to hell and those vultures can’t wait.” That was the second thing I thought about.
I had to get my mind right not knowing if I had to fight or kill someone to protect myself upon entry into the prison system. You can’t cry, and just like Profect said, “I’m dead inside.”
“Preperation” is next and your thoughts of God in dire situations is so profound in “Preperation” by Profect. This song is brutal but truthful in the process where you feel like you’ve been abandoned by everyone including God.
In “Preperation” I think every Christian comes to the same point when it comes to following God. First you have to have an honest talk with God.
Aftershock is after “Preperation” and it’s CHILLING! Are you an inmate or convict?
Next in “Inner Thoughts” Profect gets very intimate with the story of his brother and gives a glimpse of his family issues. This was by far some of the most heartfelt bars on the album!
“TIME KEEPS TICKING, I FEEL LIKE I’M FADING AWAY.” The bars explains the next track “Time Keeps Ticking.” Enough said.
I think I’ve listened to this album twice a day since it came out. I would say if you haven’t been to prison for breaking the law, stop committing the crime while you’re ahead. But I believe this album would definitely help anyone heading down that wrong path.
Beauty for Ashes unfolds as a cinematic music biography. I think the production is tight and for an indie artist that’s very important. Profect, Lord willing has a bright future.
