Are you ready for rest?
One of my favorite gospel hymns is a song called, “Jesus, keep me near the cross”. In the chorus there is line that says, “rest beyond the river”. This rest refers to life after death in heaven. I yearn for this rest. It is full of peace. The Bible states, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev 21:4 NIV) Wow, can you picture it, rest.
Heaven, a place of no more suffering and pain. In this life, we have trouble, tribulations and life moves so fast. Days moves so quickly, many times we ask ourselves, “What day is it?”. We live in a culture addicted to quickness, speed and fast paced living. Rest, restoration, and peace are words of a foreign language. I believe David in the 23rd Psalms says it best. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”(Psalms 23:1-3 NIV)
One day the Lord will bring us home. He will be our good Shepard. He will provide everything. He will lie us down in open green spaces. He will lead us beside calm waters. Finally we will have “rest beyond the river”.
